Computational Modeling of Word Reading, Acquired Dyslexia, and Remediation

چکیده
Many researchers assume that the most appropriate way to express the systematic aspects of language is in terms of a set of rules. For instance, there is a systematic relationship between the written and spoken forms of most English words (e.g., GAVE ), and this relationship can be expressed in terms of a fairly concise set of grapheme-phoneme correspondence (GPC) rules (e.g., G , A E , V ). In addition to being able to generate accurate pronunciations of so-called regular words, such rules also provide a straightforward account of how skilled readers apply their knowledge to novel items—for example, in pronouncing word-like nonwords (e.g., MAVE ). Most linguistic domains, however, are only partially systematic. Thus, there are many English words whose pronunciations violate the standard GPC rules (e.g., HAVE ). Given that skilled readers can pronounce such exception words correctly, GPC rules alone are insufficient. More generally, skilled language performance at virtually every level of analysis— phonological, morphological, lexical, syntactic—requires both effective handling of exceptional items and the ability to generalize to novel forms.

On the interaction of selective attention and lexical knowledge: a connectionist account of neglect dyslexia.
Neglect dyslexia, a reading impairment acquired as a consequence of brain injury, is traditionally interpreted as a disturbance of selective attention. Patients with neglect dyslexia may ignore the left side of an open book, the beginning words of a line of text, or the beginning letters of a single word. These patients provide a rich but sometimes contradictory source of data regarding the loc...
متن کاملAcquired Dyslexia in Japanese : Implications for Reading Theory
Acquired dyslexia research has been conducted mainly on English neurological patients. A limited number of dyslexia studies on non-alphabetic orthographies are available. Classical case studies for acquired dyslexia in Japanese, which has two distinctive scripts (morphographic Kanji and phonographic Kana), reported 'script-dependent' dyslexia patterns. Although recent case studies showed 'scrip...
متن کاملReading disorders in primary progressive aphasia: a behavioral and neuroimaging study.
Previous neuropsychological studies on acquired dyslexia revealed a double dissociation in reading impairments. Patients with phonological dyslexia have selective difficulty in reading pseudo-words, while those with surface dyslexia misread exception words. This double dissociation in reading abilities has often been reported in brain-damaged patients, but it has not been consistently shown in ...

developmental dyslexia in children who received phono-logically based reading remediation have demonstrated that reading improvement is associated with the " nor-Summary malization " of previously underactivated left hemisphere brain regions (Aylward et al., 2003; Richards et al., 2000; Brain imaging studies have explored the neural mech-Shaywitz et al., 2004; Simos et al., 2002). The mecha-ani...

Developmental dyslexia is traditionally defined as a discrepancy between reading ability and intelligence in children receiving adequate reading tuition. The possible existence of dyslexic subtypes has intrigued the researchers and practitioners for nearly a century. The aim of this research was to study the classification of subtypes of developmental dyslexia in Persian speakers. This resear...
